What is an EMT - Basic? An EMT is an Emergency Medical Technician.  The EMT - Basic provides Pre-hospital medical care to stabilize individuals who are sick or injured.

What are the requirements to become an EMT? To become an EMT-Basic the individual must: be at least (18) eighteen years of age prior to entry into the training program, have completed English 085 or achieve a designation of College Reading, possess a valid Healthcare Provider CPR card, have a physical examination within the last year, have received Tuberculosis (TB) testing no more than (6) six months prior to the beginning of class, either obtain or decline the Hepatitis C vaccination series, provide proof of immunization to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella, completion of the MCC EMT-Basic application submitted to the EMS office.

How long is the Basic EMT program? The Basic-EMT program is a one semester program.  The program meets two evenings per week and selected Saturdays throughout the semester.

How do you become state certified? After successful completion of the program the student must successfully pass a National Computer Based Testing Examination.

How long is the certification valid? The certification period is for two (2) years.

How do I renew my certification? To renew your certification, you have to complete a state approved Refresher Course.

When is the EMT course offered? The Basic EMT course is offered each semester.

What are the requirements to become a Paramedic? To become a Paramedic the individual must: be at least (18) eighteen years of age prior to entry into the training program, obtain an appropriate score or completion of English 085 and Math 021 (Pre-Algebra), current Arizona EMT certification with one year pre-hospital experience, documented,  possess a valid Healthcare Provider CPR card, successful completion of HAZ-MAT First Responder 24-hour training, completion of the MCC paramedic application submitted to the EMS office.

What is the process to enroll into the Paramedic program? To be accepted into the Paramedic program, an applicant must successfully pass a 100 question EMT - Basic written examination, successfully pass a practical skills examination (National Registry Patient Assessment - Trauma, and a Random Skill), successfully complete an Oral Board Evaluation.

What if I have a criminal record? There is a criminal history component to the Arizona Department of Health Services Bureau of EMS certification application.  A criminal history will not prevent you from participating in the Mohave Community College training program, but it could prevent you from being certified as an EMT Basic with the AZDHS/BEMS.  If you have any questions regarding this, you must contact the Arizona Department of Health Services.
