What are the training options for Maintenance Technicians at MCC? MCC offers a 27 credit hour certificate in industrial maintenance. This certificate will provide students with basic skills in heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing, and based electrical applications and troubleshooting.  An Associate of General Studies degree is available, and is particularly important for those students who wish to move into management or supervisory positions.

Where can I learn these skills? In order to be successful in this field, you’ll need both classroom insruction and hands-on experience. Most employers will feel more confident if you can demonstrate a working knowledge of various building related problems that crop up.

Are there prerequisites for the program? Yes, the program requires that you complete the Industrial Basic Skills Training class (ITP 100). Electrical classes and plumbing classes must be taken in sequence.

Is Financial Aid available? Yes, MCC has extensive financial aid. See pages 20-25 in the college catalog for information on applying for financial aid, and available scholarships. Students who are interested should apply for aid by starting with the free application for federal aid (FAFSA) to prequalify. Go to www.fafsa.gov for an online application.

But, make sure you arrive ready and eager to participate and learn.

Is the training appropriate for entry level technicians? Yes, our program is designed for the beginner, and provides the necessary skills needed for entry level employment in the electrical service industry.

When are the classes offered? Most trades-related classes are offered in the evenings and some weekends, to provide students with jobs to complete the program. Day sections are also available to some classes. Check the class schedule for class listings in your community.

Who can I contact for more information? The contacts are listed on this program home page and will provide you with contacts for each of MCC’s campuses.

Are these programs accredited? Yes, MCC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. In addition, other accreditations may apply to specific programs.

How long will it take me to complete this program and get a cert/degree full-time and part-time?  Generally, most students can complete the certificate in 4 semesters. Full-time students can complete the degree in 4 semesters.

What are the Maintenance mechanic job prospects? It is cheaper to maintain a building than to build a new one. If a new building in constructed, it will have more gadgets, features, and amenities (i.e. more potential maintenance challenges in the future). As a result, there will always be steady work for you.
