The concept of boulder collection is simple, just lift, carry, and drop into place. However, devising a way to lift boulders up to one ton in weight was the hardest portion of the project implementation due to the lack of available heavy equipment.

This problem was solved by donated time of a Suburban to haul an eight-foot long homemade trailer (Figure 3) with a lift boom. A one-ton budget chain pulley system with a trolley on the lift boom was used to pick up the boulders.

The very best examples of some rock types were not accessible as we were restricted to those boulders that lay next to existing roads. A maximum trailer capacity is two to three boulders depending on size and weight.
