The MCC Computer Science Department is offering camps on all campuses, which feature fun and engaging ways to educate teens about the STEM fields.
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, STEM degree holders have higher incomes than those in non-STEM careers. STEM occupations are growing at 17%, while other occupations are growing at 9.8%.
On the Lake Havasu City campus, teenage campers will get hands-on practice taking apart, rebuilding, and building from scratch a personal computer. They’ll learn about hardware, and some software, for personal computers. The skills they will learn are similar to the requirements of the A+ Computer Repair Certification Exam. This camp is June 4 – June 14. 9:00 a.m. – Noon. Monday – Thursday.
The Lake Havasu City campus will also have an afternoon day camp that focuses on Computer Programming and Web Design. Campers will learn basic programs in Java, and apply these concepts in creating a web-based project of their choosing. This will involve creating a web page using HTML5, styling it using CSS and using JavaScript to provide the necessary logic. This camp is June 4 – June 14. 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday.
