2 MCC BHC students awarded All Arizona Academic Team Scholarship

MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave Community College would like to congratulate two students, David Mendez and Wendy Gustafson, from the Bullhead City campus for being selected at All Arizona Academic Team members.

All Arizona Academic Team members in the transfer category receive a full tuition scholarship to any public university in Arizona after they graduate MCC. The scholarship covers resident tuition for 10 consecutive undergraduate semesters or 60 credits for the fall and spring semesters.

Gustafson is majoring in Social and Behavioral Science at MCC. She is planning to transfer to Arizona State University where she will earn her bachelor’s degree in Women and Gender Studies. Her career goals are to work in youth behavioral health and prevention because she enjoys helping youth overcome challenges during their most vulnerable years.

“To have been nominated and selected to receive the All Arizona Academic Team Scholarship and represent Mohave Community College is an honor and a source of great pride for me,” Gustafson said. “It was a complete surprise when I was nominated and I’m thrilled to have been chosen and looking forward to starting my bachelor’s degree at ASU in the fall.”

At MCC she is part of the Phi Theta Kappa – Alpha Chi Psi Bullhead City campus chapter. Gustafson was born in Southern California and lives in Topock, AZ for 12 years. She enjoys sewing and repurposing furniture. Gustafson also spends her free time running an Airbnb in Topock.

Mendez, a first-generation student, is majoring in Liberal Arts to get his prerequisites completed. He plans to transfer to Arizona State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and eventually attend medical school to become a neurologist.

“Receiving something like this is incredible I can reach higher in the sky with this amazing opportunity and dive deeper into my dreams,” Mendez said. “A sense of relief is also a feeling I’ve gotten from receiving the All Arizona Academic Team Scholarship.”

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and after decided to go back to school. On his free time, he enjoys playing the card game Yu-Gi-Oh and taking his dogs for a walk. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa – Alpha Chi Psi Bullhead City campus chapter. Mendez would also like to thank his wife, Vanessa, for all the support and encouragement to follow his dreams.
