MOHAVE COUNTY – Ian Fleming has been selected as the 2023 Commencement Student Speaker for Mohave Community College. At MCC he is working towards earning his Associate of Arts in Mathematics degree.

After MCC, he’s planning to transfer to the University of Arizona and major in Aerospace Engineering. His career goal is to work in a diverse engineering team where he can couple his mathematical and engineering skills with flight and space exploration.

As student speaker he will share with his peers to follow their passions and provide words of encouragement as they move forward in their lives.

“The title of my speech is ‘From Homelessness to Graduation,’ which would not have been possible without God in my life,” Fleming said. “I want everyone to know that it’s never too late for a second chance in life.”

As for being selected as student speaker he is “very grateful and excited” because of the hard work he has done to accomplish his goals. Coming to MCC, he was provided the opportunity to attain an affordable education, access to great instructors and other valuable resources during his academic journey.

Fleming said, after conversations with advisors and the financial aid team, he was advised to sign up for classes because he was close to obtaining a degree due to previous college courses taken. He took the advice and decided it was one of the best decisions he made.

Fleming was also selected to be part of the 2023 All-Arizona Academic Team which provides him a tuition waiver to any Arizona public university. He was very excited and humbled to have received the award because without it he probably wouldn’t have continued his education.

“It’s exciting in the fact that I’m now able to continue my academic endeavors at an Arizona university and no longer held back due to monetary concerns,” Fleming said. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be able to represent MCC in this capacity and I can continue in my higher education because of this scholarship.”

Fleming is the first in his family to graduate from college. Being a first-generation graduate, he was provided the opportunity to mature and better understand the world. His career goal is to work as a flight engineer for a manned spacecraft for a private company or the government. He’s a student leader by holding the role of President of Phi Theta Kappa-Alpha Chi Psi chapter, Vice President of the Chess Club and involved with Student Activities Council.
